Mushroom farming in Terrace- New business opportunity in Cities

Mushroom farming is popularizing day by day in India.Even though its majority of customers are in city areas, many farms are still located in remote areas.Lack of space for the farm is the main reason why they are away from cities. The remote area farms creates lots of transportation and marketing costs in the entire system and thus increase the price of the products. The permanent solution is to produce Mushrooms in city area terraces. This opens a wide opportunity for people living cities to run a successful side business in their terrace.

Area Required

Based on the plan and space availability we can opt for 500 sq feet , 300 sq feet or 150 sq feet green house model shelter for the mushroom farm in terrace. The roof should be blue colored sheet and allow only 50% light to penetrate inside. We have to prepare another room or use one existing room as Dark room.Inside the Green house,we can arrange equipment for moisture and temperature control.

Availability of Raw materials

The chance for getting good quality paddy is less in cities. So we should do some arrangements with village farmers to ensure its availability.Other raw materials are are easily available in city areas.

Marketing

In city areas, there is no issues with Marketing of Mushrooms.People living in apartments always require good quality Mushrooms. What we have to do is just inform them about our farm and availability of quality Mushrooms. If we can ensure consistent production, local food and retail stores will also become our customers.

There is no big difference in Mushroom farming at city and village areas. But in city areas we have some advantages such as easy marketing and low transportation costs. So if we can utilize our terrace space effectively,we can start to generate income...

Stages of cultivation of Mushrooms in a commercial farm

While farming Mushrooms for commercial purposes, each stage of growth should be identified well and necessary cares should be taken. This classification of different growth stages will help us to easily track the growth of our Mushrooms and establish an order in each activities in the farm.Below are the main three stages of Mushroom cultivation in a farm

Mycelium production

In this stage,Spores separated from mushroom tissues are introduced to grains. This mixture is allowed to form a fully grown Mycelium culture. This processes are usually done in a laboratory conditions. This stage is very important and require grate care to ensure quality mushroom production.

Colonization

The Mycelium culture is introduced in to suitable substrate and is allowed for colonization.Normally this stage is done in a dark room.Once the substrate is fully colonized,it is moved to fruiting chamber.

Fruiting

In this stage,The fully colonized substrate is moved to fruiting chamber where all necessary atmospheric conditions are provided.Around 90% humidity is provided and temperature is maintained between 22-28 Deg C.Depending on the mushroom breed we farm, some extra conditions like soil, sunlight, compost etc also provided here. The mushrooms are harvested at the end of this stage.

The above stages are a rough outline only. There are various other activities like substrate preparation, sterilization, humidity controlling, pest controlling such activities involved for a successful mushroom harvest.however ,above post may help to get a basic idea about the stages of mushroom cultivation in a farm.

How to produce High Quality Mushrooms

Producing High Quality Mushrooms is always a challenge for a Mushroom farmer. The success and growth of his business depends on how he handle this. For getting a decent profit,he should be prepared. There are some  factors which influence the growth and fruiting of mushrooms and thereby its Quality.Having some  knowledge and taking necessary steps to control them will ensure a successful mushroom harvest.A Mushroom farmer can produce High Quality Mushrooms by controlling below factors.

Quality of  spores or Mycelium culture

Quality of spores or Mycelium culture plays a major role in entire production cycle.Mycelium is the actively growing spore collection which is used for the easy introduction of mushrooms in the substrate(straw, sawdust, wood chips etc). They are cultured in a lab.Ensuring the quality of Mycelium culture will help us to get high quality Mushrooms. So buy Mycelium from a trustworthy source.

Growth Medium

This is another important factor which influence the production of mushrooms.Unlike plants, which derives their energy from photosynthesis,Mushrooms derives energy from growth medium by decomposing it through Biochemical process. So the quality of the growth medium plays significant role in overall production. The substrate should be easily digestible for mushrooms and should contain all necessary nutrients.Adding grains to the substrate will help to increase production. There are lots of researches going on this area. Most common and popular growth medium used in India is Straw.

Temperature and Humidity

There are two stages in a Mushroom growth. Mycelium growth and Fruit growth.During mycelium growth,it should be kept in a dark room at a temperature of 22-30 Deg C. CO2 level should be low.Enough ventilation help to decrease CO2.During Fruit growth phase, the Milky mushroom should be kept in an area where it can get some sunlight. The Humidity should be between 80-90% to enhance proper fruiting.

Pests and Diseases

Other Fungi and bacteria are the main issues which can affect Mushroom production. For avoiding them, the substrate should be sterilized well and the rooms should be neat and sterilized. There are some flies which lay egg on substrate and eat mushrooms.Proper covering of the rooms will help to avoid them. After each production cycle, the rooms should be cleaned and sterilized.

Water supply

Mushrooms contain 90% water. The quality of water we use will play major role in Mushroom production. For providing 80-90% humidity,we relay on mist irrigation. So there should be an eye on the quality of water we use or mushroom production. Contaminated water is a good source of other micro organisms which may causes diseases in Mushrooms.

By precise control of each of these elements,we can optimize the production in a Mushroom farm and produce high quality Mushrooms.Modern mushroom farms use fully automated systems to regulate Temperature and Humidity inside the farm.Exhaust fans and other technologies like mist irrigation help to achieve better performance.

Oyster and Milky Mushrooms

Oyster,Milky and button Mushrooms are the main mushroom breeds cultivated in India. Among these,Oyster and milky mushrooms are commonly farmed in Kerala.Oyster mushroom is shown in this image. It is shaped like an Oyster shell. It is very soft and should be used in the same day after harvesting.Milky mushrooms are pure white and having typical mushroom shape and size. They can be stocked up to one week. They are having high sale potential compared to Oyster mushrooms.Below are some facts related to Oyster and Milky mushrooms.

  • Oyster Mushrooms require immediate use after harvesting.Milky mushrooms can last up to one week.
  • Oyster Mushrooms not require sunlight and soil. But Milky mushrooms require both.
  • Milky mushrooms have high market potential compared to Oyster mushrooms
  • Oyster mushrooms are tastier than Milky mushrooms
  • Oyster mushrooms are suitable for small scale farming and Milky mushrooms are suitable for medium, large and High tech farming.
Growing both type of mushrooms in a farm will bring better results,But it require lots of knowledge and hard work.So it will be better to start with Oyster or Milky mushrooms and later farm other types of mushrooms.
