Different Breeds of Goats in India

   Goats are reared mainly for two purposes.One for Milk and other for Meat purpose.Some breeds are excellent for milk purpose, but are poor for meat usage.Some are good for meat,but poor for milk.Some breeds can be used for both milk and meat.So it is very important to have a vision on our requirement.After knowing why we do farming,we can choose suitable goats.

Some of the important Indian Goats are

  • Jamnapari: The name is associated with the river Yamuna.This breeds are mainly from UP.One of the largest Goat breeds in India.They are suitable for both milk and meat purposes.
  • Sirohi: They are from Rajasthan.They are medium sized goats.They have good feed to meat conversion ratio.they can survive in extreme climatic conditions.Average meat and milk production.
  • Malabari or Telicherry :They are mainly used for Milk purpose.It is Kerala's native breed.They are low in size.But the Meat is very tasty.They have high disease resistance.
  These are the main Native breeds of Goats reared in India.The speciality of these breeds are their excellent disease resistance and adaptation ability to Indian conditions.

Imported goats
  • Boer:They are imported from South Africa.This breed is mainly used for Meat purpose.They have excellent growth rate.It is one of the popular goats reared for meat purpose.They are suitable for high scale commercial farming for meat purpose.
  So while selecting the breeds for farming,we should have a clear idea of our farming objectives.
