Emu is basically an Australian bird. This foreign bird was brought to India on late 1990s.Andra pradesh is believed to be having first Emu farm in India. From the first Emu farm,Emu farming in India developed a lot to be having lots of Emu farms all over India which is a considerable development in the field of animal husbandry. Today Emu farming is a profitable business for farms in Andra Pradesh,Karnataka,Maharashtra,Tamil Nadu and Kerala states.More and more Emu farms are opening in other states also.
Even though Emu is an Australian bird,it is having great ability to survive in almost all climatic conditions in various parts of the world.Indian climate is suitable for Emu birds,That is the reason behind the success of Emu farms all over India.Rain,Winter,Summer seasons are repeating in Indian climate, which helps Emu to experience moderate levels of all climatic conditions.Emu birds have their own natural resistance towards diseases. This also helps Emu to sustain in Indian conditions.

How to setup a small scale emu farm in kerala

Here i am describing about basic factors which needs to be implemented for starting a small scale emu farm. These are basic requirements and you may improve your farm as per your vision based on these factors.

Preparing farm land

We can select the amount of space required for our farm based on number of birds we are rearing. As a small scale farm,i would advice two to five pairs of Emu birds. For a two pair farm,we require 30m*30m fenced land. This is the basic land requirement ,if we can increase the space, the birds will become more suited in the farm. The height of fencing should be 6 feet. This is enough for rearing two pair birds. We can give a small shelter in one of the edges of this land-this area is mainly used for giving food and water during rainy seasons and for getting some rain protection if the birds wish to get.But for egg laying birds we should prepare specially prepared shelter-we can discuss about it later.Try to get some shadow places like coconut farm land for starting the farm.

Selecting birds

Selection of birds to rear is purely based on our strategy of implementation. If we require immediate result from our farm and can handle big initial cost,we can go for buying breeding pairs.if we have enough patience to grow Emu chicks ,we can go for 3-6 months old emu chicks. The advantage of this strategy is that we will get enough experience and time before our farm starts reproduction. We can also develop marketing strategies based on our experience. The farm from which we buy birds should be selected very carefully.Always try to link with well established farmers. Some farms may sell birds based on buy back guarantee. We can benefit from such deals, but try to ensure the correctness of their words.Check if preliminary vaccinations are given to the chicks, else do arrangements for giving it.Keep an eye on the health and activeness of chicks before buying them.

Arrangements for feeding

Each Emu bird will have 1Kg of food every day and plenty of water. So arrangements should be done keeping these things in mind.Main food sources are commercial feeders(starter, grower, finisher),waste vegetables, plant leafs etc.We can also prepare feeders using available grains in our home.Emu should be fed twice a day.Early morning and after noon. They won't eat or drink during night.Water should be available all over the day time. The also eat sands with food for digestive purpose. So we have to ensure quality(not contaminated) sands are available in the farm for Emu to eat .Grits have to be provided once in a week.

Maintenance and marketing

This is the final step in the setup of our farm. All activities like cleaning, promoting, marketting, giving medicines, medical precautions etc comes in this catogary.Emu birds should be de-wormed at every 3 months.Try to ensure the cleaness of the habitat.Keeping in touch with other farmers will help us to form good marketting strategies. We can discuss about it later. The other things about the farm should be handled using your wisdom and vision.

End use of Emu birds

Success of every farming activities depend upon the bottom level use of its products. If there is no such use for a product, then the whole system associated with that product will not survive. So it is very important to know about the end use of emu birds before we start emu business.
We already discussed various products/uses of emu birds. The main use of emu bird which can turn into a key use is Emu meat.Of course,Meat is the end use of Emu birds. But the way to accomplish that goal is not that much easy as the farming is in its initial stage in Kerala ,we don't have enough  birds for sluttering and continuous supply of meat.In other states like Tamil nadu, some big farmers already started to build Emu processing plants for sluttering of Emu birds.
For the existence of this industry in Kerala, we should have such processing plants soon.Else there won't be any use for these birds(expecting huge rise in number of emu birds within 2 years in Kerala) and no use means, the industry won't survive.Formation of emu farmers associations can make big changes in this field.
